Adidas Defends Algeria Jersey Design Amid Moroccan Cultural Appropriation Claims

Morocco has asked Adidas to withdraw the new Algeria jersey, on the grounds that the outfit is inspired by Moroccan zellige art. The response from the German brand did not take long.
The sportswear manufacturer quickly reacted to this accusation, arguing that its new controversial jersey was inspired by the patterns visible in the Mechouar palace in Tlemcen, in northwestern Algeria.
The day after the presentation of the new Fennecs jersey, the Moroccan authorities expressed their anger over the geometric patterns of the garment. This is a "cultural appropriation and an attempt to steal a motif from the Moroccan cultural heritage," the Ministry of Culture had denounced.
The department has, in this sense, put Adidas on notice to remove all the jerseys that will be put on sale from October 14.
