2030 World Cup Final: Even Madrid’s Mayor Now Sees Casablanca as the Favorite
Madrid’s mayor now believes that Casablanca has a better chance than the Spanish capital of hosting the 2030 World Cup final. José Luis Martínez-Almeida accuses Pedro Sánchez’s government of not doing enough to support the Santiago Bernabéu’s bid.
“Casablanca has a better chance than Madrid” of securing the 2030 World Cup final. The statement came from José Luis Martínez-Almeida, mayor of the Spanish capital and a member of the People’s Party. He was speaking on Tuesday in Zaragoza at a meeting organized by the daily newspaper Heraldo de Aragón.
The Madrid official draws a direct link between this sporting battle and relations between Spain and Morocco, currently marked by the crisis in Sebta. He mainly attacks Pedro Sánchez: “If he is incapable of defending the Ceuta border, how is he going to defend the World Cup final in Madrid?”

In his statements, Almeida says that Morocco “wants this final” and is acting politically to obtain it. By contrast, he says he sees no sign that the Spanish government is mobilizing in support of Madrid.
Madrid’s Mayor Calls for “Consequences”
The mayor nevertheless continues to present Madrid as the most logical choice. He recalls that the bid was initially put forward by Spain and Portugal before Morocco joined the project, and believes that the Spanish capital has the necessary arguments to host the competition’s final match.
José Luis Martínez-Almeida nevertheless says he has received no information about any action by the Spanish government in support of his city. “We have no contact with the Spanish government, and no steps have been communicated to us,” he laments.
The official goes even further. If the final is not held in Madrid, he believes there should be “consequences,” without specifying their nature. However, he refuses to say whether Spain should reconsider its participation in organizing the tournament.

FIFA has not yet designated any city and says that its decision will be made at a later date. The Grand Stade Hassan II, under construction near Casablanca, remains in contention alongside the Santiago Bernabéu and other Spanish stadiums.
After several Spanish football officials, it is now Madrid’s mayor himself who publicly acknowledges that Casablanca could start with an advantage.
