María del Rosario Tomasena Alzuni, 77 years old and from Guipuscoa (Basque Country), has become the oldest woman to have swam across the Strait of Gibraltar.
The septuagenarian made her crossing by swimming in the afternoon of July 18th. She swam for six hours to cover the 16.1 kilometers separating the Strait of Gibraltar from the Moroccan coast. She set off from Tarifa (Cádiz) at 11:30 a.m. (local time), reports Play Ground Web.
"Total admiration and respect. She has shown that it is never too late to fulfill a dream," said the Association for Swimming Across the Strait of Gibraltar (ACNEG), which congratulated Maria on her feat.
