Wildfire Rages Near Moroccan City of Fnideq, Challenging Firefighters

Efforts are continuing to bring the fire under control that broke out on Saturday night into Sunday in the Haouz Malaliyine forest located in the commune of Aaliyine (prefecture of M’diq-Fnideq).
The intervention teams are working to overcome the fire that broke out in a hard-to-reach area, marked by rising temperatures and strong winds. Three Canadair aircraft from the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), seven tank trucks from the Civil Protection and three intervention vehicles from the water and forestry services and the fight against desertification have been mobilized for this purpose.
Teams from civil protection, water and forests and the fight against desertification, the FAR and national promotion have also been mobilized to limit the damage, under the supervision of the prefectural authorities.
In terms of damage, the fire, according to preliminary estimates, has destroyed about 50 hectares of forest cover, including Aleppo pine trees, cork oaks and secondary species.
