Wild Serval Spotted in Tangier Forest, Authorities Launch Search

The city of Tangier is on alert. And for good reason, a serval has been spotted in a forest, causing general panic and the mobilization of water and forestry agents.
The animal was spotted as it was walking on secondary roads and inside the Slouquia forest in Tangier. On the ground, the authorities have mobilized their services, the elements of water and forests and specialists in wild animals, in order to locate the serval and capture it. In the meantime, the prefecture of the region is calling on residents in the alert zone to be cautious and vigilant and to inform the competent authorities as soon as the animal appears.
Last December, a rumor had reported the reappearance near Khénifra of an Atlas lion, a species considered extinct for more than 70 years. The National Agency of Water and Forests (ANEF) had conducted field research to locate traces in the reported localities and the surrounding areas, and collected additional information from resource persons. The analysis of the footprints discovered in the neighboring natural areas shows that they belong to specimens of the canidae family, probably a dog or a North African golden wolf. It was therefore not an Atlas Lion.
Update of Thursday, April 25: it is a serval.
