Why is the transfer of 30 Emirati Mirages to Morocco blocked?

Morocco’s acquisition of 30 Mirage 2000-9 combat aircraft from the United Arab Emirates is being slowed down by the geopolitical context. The war in the Middle East is pushing Abu Dhabi to maintain its military capabilities.

The initial agreement provided for the transfer of 30 Dassault Mirage 2000-9 fighters, an operation authorized by France as early as 2024. However, the hostilities between the United States and Israel against Iran and its allies are slowing down the process. According to Africa Intelligence, the Emirati authorities prefer to maintain their current firepower while awaiting the delivery of their new Rafale F4s, scheduled for this year.

The delivery schedule for the Rafales extends until 2031, so Abu Dhabi must keep its Mirages to avoid any gaps in its air defense during this transition phase. To ensure their operational efficiency, a heavy maintenance partnership for the engines was concluded in February 2025. The gradual transfer to Morocco is now only envisaged by 2027, once the replacement is assured.

These Mirage 2000-9s represent the most modern version of their category, integrating RDY-3 radars and Talios designation pods. Their arsenal includes the "Black Shaheen" cruise missile, capable of striking at a distance of 290 kilometers. These technological assets make these aircraft a major strategic reinforcement for the Moroccan air force, which will have to be patient in the face of regional uncertainties.
