WhatsApp Limits Message Sharing to Combat Coronavirus Misinformation

WhatsApp announced on Tuesday a limitation on message sharing. The purpose of this decision is to fight against misinformation about the coronavirus epidemic that tends to create more panic.
The instant messaging service explains that messages received on WhatsApp can no longer be shared with as many conversations as desired at once, but only with one. "We know that many users transmit useful information, as well as funny videos, reflections or prayers that they find important," WhatsApp said on its online blog.
"In recent weeks, people have also used WhatsApp to support healthcare workers who are risking their lives in the fight against coronavirus." But behind these good intentions, unfortunately there are messages that, instead of informing, sow doubt and fear among users. "We believe it is important to slow down the spread of these messages so that WhatsApp remains a place of personal conversation," said the California-based company.
The limitation measure comes after false conspiracy theories linking 5G mobile networks to covid-19 have prompted people to set fire to cell phone masts in the UK. Facebook said on Monday that it had started removing content encouraging attacks on cell towers and 5G antennas.
These attacks have led the British government to urge social media platforms to take action to curb the spread of this misinformation.
