New Water Sources Emerge in Morocco Following Devastating Earthquake

Despite the heavy toll, the powerful and devastating earthquake of September 8 in Morocco had positive repercussions.
From the violent earthquake that occurred in the Al Haouz region on September 8, we will not only remember the negative effects. Before the members of the permanent commission on basic infrastructure in the House of Representatives, Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, revealed that this earthquake caused the appearance of 69 new water sources in the affected regions, including 32 in the province of Al Haouz. The Royal Center for Spatial Remote Sensing (CRTS) in the provinces of Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Ouarzazate and Taroudant contributed to the localization of these water sources.
The minister also said that the earthquake increased the flow for some old water sources and decreased it for others. He was keen to reassure about the structural safety of the dams, which did not suffer any damage. Not to mention the series of measures taken by his department to provide sufficient drinking water to the populations of these regions. These include the use of water transport by tanker trucks, the installation of 235 public fountains at the 133 sites hosting the accommodation camps where the populations of the region, whose homes have been partially or totally damaged, are housed.
The powerful earthquake that shook Morocco killed nearly 3,000 people, 6,125 injured, in addition to significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, according to the latest report from the authorities, announced on September 13. In total, 50,000 houses collapsed completely or partially.
