Morocco Coach Faces Backlash Over National Team Selection for AFCON Qualifiers

The list of Moroccan players selected for the Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches against Gabon and Lesotho is causing a lot of ink to flow. Walid Regragui, the national coach, is the target of numerous criticisms regarding his choices, considered incomprehensible by some supporters and analysts.
The absence of Hakim Ziyech, the Galatasaray star, who is nevertheless recovered from his injury, is at the center of the debates. On social networks, the fans of the Atlas Lions are not calming down and are asking for explanations. How can we do without a player of such stature, whose experience and talent could be precious assets for the national team, they wonder.
Other players shining in the European championships are also missing. Zakaria Aboukhlal (Toulouse) and Amine Harit (Olympique de Marseille) are also paying the price for Regragui’s choices. Their non-selection is perceived as a lack of recognition of their club performances.
In defense, it is the absence of Mehdi Boukamir, a player from the Olympic team that won the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Games, that is surprising. For some, he could have provided valuable reinforcement to a defense considered the weak link of the team.
Another point of contention: the call-up of four goalkeepers. Wouldn’t it have been wiser to select an additional field player, wonder some observers.
Finally, the case of Reda Belahyane is intriguing. This midfielder, who is impressing in Italy with his recovery qualities, was not selected, to the general surprise.
Morocco’s next matches will take place on November 15 and 18, against Gabon and Lesotho.
