Violent Clash on Marrakech’s Famous Square Raises Tourism Concerns

A violent altercation broke out on the famous Jamaa el-Fna square in Marrakech, between a group of African migrants and juice vendors. This confrontation took a dramatic turn, leading to the partial amputation of the finger of a police commissioner who intervened to restore order. The victim was quickly taken care of by the emergency services and transported to the hospital.
According to the initial elements of the investigation, the conflict would have started following a disagreement concerning the allocation of sales locations on the square, very popular with tourists. The protagonists were apprehended and taken to the police station for questioning, before being released. This escalation of violence, in front of many foreign visitors, deals a severe blow to the image of the city and Moroccan tourism, warns Rue20.
The Jamaa el-Fna square and its surroundings have become the theater of a growing presence of African migrants, who sell their goods. They are accused of bothering passers-by, even in the shops. This situation, denounced by the merchants, would be favored by some unscrupulous "lobbies" who would privilege their profits to the detriment of the general interest, specifies the same source.
The influx of these street vendors is accompanied by an increase in crime. Thefts and assaults are multiplying, especially at nightfall, creating an atmosphere of insecurity for both residents and tourists. Women are also victims of harassment, taking advantage of the anonymity of the crowd.
Faced with this worrying situation, merchants and residents are calling for firm intervention by the local authorities and law enforcement. They denounce the inaction in the face of abuses and incivilities that tarnish the image of the Jamaa el-Fna square, once a symbol of the conviviality and cultural richness of Marrakech.
