Urban Traffic Accidents Claim 30 Lives in One Week, DGSN Report Reveals
An alarming report was drawn up by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) which mentions about thirty people killed in traffic accidents that occurred in urban areas, only during the week of August 12 to 18, 2019.
The statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) mentions extremely serious accidents that caused a very large number of injuries, 1,615 precisely, including 80 very serious ones.
Among the main causes of these accidents, the statement cites the inattention of drivers and pedestrians, excessive speed and non-compliance with vertical and horizontal signage. Added to all these, non-compliance with safety distances between vehicles, driving in the left lane and driving under the influence of alcohol have also been noted.
Moreover, it should be emphasized that the driver’s behavior, which goes against the provisions of the Highway Code, is estimated at 90% as the primary cause of traffic accidents. So many risk factors that are reinforced by more intense traffic on roads and highways during this summer period, in particular. This influx is justified by the high concentration of the population along the coastal cities, as well as at the seaside resorts.
To address all this, measures are being taken by the competent authorities, including, among others, risk prevention through education, training, awareness-raising and communication, but also the implementation of a more effective control system and deterrent sanctions.
