Unlicensed Dentist Sentenced to Prison for Child’s Death, Sparking Calls for Crackdown

The dental technician who, in 2017, caused the death of a 12-year-old child, was sentenced to 1 year in prison with a fine of 300,000 dirhams, to be paid to the victims’ family. The verdict provoked general outrage.
Three years after the death of a child in Oued Laou, as a result of complications from a dental procedure, the National Order of Dental Surgeons and the Association for the Defense of Human Rights continue to denounce the illegal practice of a regulated profession.
The two organizations are urging the authorities to intervene in order to ensure the control of prosthetic or teeth whitening clinics, which continue to proliferate and practice a profession in disregard of the regulations in force.
For lawyer Habib Hajji, a revision of the legislation on people practicing a regulated profession, particularly fake dentists, is more than topical. This fraudulent practice exposes the lives of citizens to great dangers, particularly with the handling of anesthetic products and the prescription of medicines, he denounced.
The lawyer wonders about the role of the control commissions, supposed to put an end to this anarchy, knowing that these charlatans display very competitive prices to attract their clientele. The authorities of Tetouan are tightening the security grip around the traffickers of anesthesia products. The police services are trying to trace back the supply chain that supplies the black market.
