UNESCO: Morocco snatches recognition of the Caftan, a historic setback for Algeria
Morocco definitively wins the "war of the caftan". UNESCO on Wednesday inscribed the traditional garment on the intangible heritage list, sweeping aside Algeria’s attempts to obstruct the process and appropriate this centuries-old know-how through last-minute procedural maneuvers.
New Delhi served as the setting for this long-awaited consecration. On December 10, 2025, the intergovernmental committee validated the entry of the Moroccan caftan on its representative list. This decision seals the international recognition of a twelve-century-old heritage, putting an end to the campaigns of disinformation and cultural appropriation carried out on social networks and digital platforms.
The completion of this file marks a resounding diplomatic failure for Algiers. The Algerian delegation tried to the end to block the process by tabling a lone amendment, an exception among the 32 applications examined that day. The maneuver, led by Ambassador Abdennour Khelifi, aimed to modify the agenda as soon as the session opened on December 8. The objective was to insert the word "caftan" in the title of an element of the costume of eastern Algeria inscribed in 2024, in order to claim the anteriority of the appellation.
This obstruction strategy collapsed in the face of the consensus of the Member States. Algeria, although sitting on the committee, was unable to impose its veto or rally support within the Arab group, chaired by Morocco. This setback adds to a series of defeats for the neighboring diplomacy, which had already failed to prevent the election of the Kingdom to the UNESCO Executive Board last November.
The inscription now secures the status of the caftan as a pillar of Moroccan identity. For artisans and creators, this official protection offers a major economic lever and guarantees that this know-how passed down from generation to generation remains safe from attempts at heritage plunder.
