Undocumented Immigrant Hailed as Hero After Saving Woman from Train Tracks in Brussels
Abderraouf, known as Abdel, is considered a hero after saving a woman who attempted suicide at the Midi station in Brussels. The video of his rescue has gone viral on social media.
Arrived in Belgium just a few weeks ago, the 25-year-old man is already a hero. Abdel is an undocumented immigrant who lived in France for several years, according to RTL Info. On August 14, while waiting for the train to Liège at the Midi station, he saves a woman who had sat on the tracks to commit suicide.
The young man spontaneously came to the aid of the woman who, visibly very desperate, did not want to be saved. Despite her resistance, Abdel manages to bring her back to the platform. The woman makes a second attempt, but the one now nicknamed the "hero of the Midi station" dissuades her.
The video of the scene has gone viral on social media. Abdel says he has received many congratulatory messages from Internet users in France, Algeria and Morocco. His heroic gesture could motivate the Belgian authorities to regularize his administrative situation, comments a retired lawyer.
