Moroccan Teen in Critical Condition After Suicide Attempt in Brussels Court Cell

A 19-year-old man of Moroccan origin attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself with his t-shirt while in a cell at the Brussels Courthouse on Monday.
The initial elements of the investigation cited by the Belgian press mention a man who was very agitated when he was returning to his cell, so much so that his shoelaces were removed. But it took a few minutes without supervision for the young man to attempt the act with his t-shirt.
The police reacted quickly, providing first aid before the man was transferred to the CHU Saint-Pierre. Currently in a state of brain death, information suggests that he could be disconnected, although the agreement of the family in Morocco remains uncertain.
Yassine M.’s lawyer spoke about the situation, stating that when leaving the courtroom, his client had smiled at him and shaken his hand, not suggesting any psychological distress.
However, the judicial context remains complex, with Yassine M. appearing for a burglary followed by a rape in Brussels. The judge had ordered pre-trial detention due to the young man’s lack of papers, described as one of the many homeless boys around the Midi station by his lawyer.
