Turkish Court Acquits Taxi Driver in Viral Assault Case of Moroccan Woman

The case of a young Moroccan woman, assaulted in February in Istanbul by a taxi driver, made headlines. Today, justice has decided to release him, causing an outcry.
Four months after the incident, the individual was acquitted, despite the camera footage showing the violence of this assault.
The facts date back to last February, when Chaimaa, a 24-year-old woman, had called a taxi from the famous Taksim Square to visit her sister who had just given birth.
However, things quickly escalated between the taxi driver and his client. Exasperated by the traffic, the driver had started insulting the young woman in Turkish, thinking she did not understand the language. He then slapped her. The entire scene had been filmed by the vehicle’s camera. He had then pushed the Moroccan woman before extorting money from her.
