Trump Threatens 100% Tax on Foreign-Made Films, Risking Morocco’s Movie Industry

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tax on American films produced abroad. A measure that could affect Morocco where many films are shot.
"We want movies made in America," Donald Trump wrote this Monday on his social network Truth Social. After imposing 20% tariffs on imported products from Canada, the U.S. President announced "immediately beginning the process of imposing 100% tariffs" on films produced abroad and distributed in the United States.
"Hollywood and many other regions of the United States are devastated," claims Donald Trump, who denounces foreign competition that would offer "all kinds of incentives to attract filmmakers and studios away from the United States." The U.S. President mentions a "concerted effort by other nations," which he says represents "a threat to national security."
In the first quarter of 2025, film shoots (including both movies and TV series) in Los Angeles recorded a 22% decrease compared to the same period the previous year. Between 2014 and 2024, a record drop of 40% was noted, reports France TV Info. For example, The Odyssey, the next film by British director Christopher Nolan, was shot in Morocco and Europe. The same is true for the series The Last of Us, filmed in Canada.
For now, the implementation conditions of this 100% tax on films produced abroad are still unclear. Would the tax be applied to the distribution of foreign productions in American theaters and on platforms, or to shoots abroad? Relations between Hollywood and the White House have been tense since the Republican’s arrival, with most American actors supporting the Democratic party.
