Trump attacks Spain amid crisis with Morocco: “Zero control of its border”

The American president published his message on Sunday, September 6, at 00:24 UTC, or 2:24 a.m. in Spain. “Very sad what is happening in Spain, a country that has ZERO control of its border. WOW!”, he wrote on Truth Social.

Donald Trump does not explicitly mention Ceuta. But RTVE and the main Spanish media immediately linked his remarks to the migration crisis currently pitting Madrid against Rabat.

This is not his first intervention. On September 3, Donald Trump described Spain as a “ruined country” on the British channel GB News and said the mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta was “very sad to see.” From the earliest days of the crisis, he had also blamed the government of Pedro Sánchez for its “weak laws” and “poor management.”

More than 63,000 returns to Morocco in three days

The crisis dates back to July 30 and 31. Before the Spanish Parliament, Pedro Sánchez stated that 50,000 people had returned to Morocco in less than 24 hours, followed by approximately 63,000 by the end of the first 72 hours. According to him, this represented more than 90% of the people who had crossed the border irregularly.

The head of government attributed the speed of these returns to “close coordination” with the Moroccan authorities. He also defended the security forces’ decision to prioritize the protection of human lives when the crossings multiplied.

The situation is nevertheless far from resolved. On August 25, Madrid declared Ceuta a “situation of interest for national security.” The decree published in the Spanish Official Gazette maintains this exceptional arrangement until December 31, 2026, in order to strengthen coordination between the administrations.

More than 5,000 migrants are reportedly still in Ceuta awaiting the examination of their return cases or asylum applications. The Spanish government has decided to temporarily use part of the port to install reception facilities and speed up their identification.
