Trump Administration Seeks Morocco’s Support in Diplomatic Push Against Iran

Saturday 15 February 2020, by Sylvanus

Clearly, the Trump administration has not abandoned its strategy of creating a new political and security alliance against Iran. If Morocco was not one of the Arab countries with whom the United States intended to ally, this time the US president is counting on its support.

The Trump administration is playing its diplomacy to obtain the support of Morocco and Sudan as key allies in its diplomatic struggle against Tehran, reports The Hill. This is a strategy that is in line with the political will of the United States to form a "larger American and Middle Eastern alliance led by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia".

According to the same source, this search for support is fueling rumors about the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. This is at the request of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is bleeding in order to normalize his relations with the kingdom. Similarly, this American strategy would be motivated by the lack of support from African and Arab countries for the "deal of the century" proposed by Donald Trump to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In May 2018, Morocco had broken off its relations with Iran, due to its alleged ties with the Polisario Front.
