Trial Set for Owner of Illegal Tangier Textile Workshop Where 28 Workers Died

On May 20, the owner of the textile workshop where 28 workers died will be informed of his fate. The investigating judge at the court of first instance in Tangier has finally decided to prosecute the owner, whose trial has been postponed several times due to the state of health of the main defendant.

It was only on May 12 that the owner of the workshop was placed in detention on the decision of the investigating judge who has just completed his investigation, reports Le360. A. B. is being prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter, involuntary injury, violation of legislation and regulations, violation of the state of health emergency, opening a business without authorization and employing minors without taking into account health and safety rules.

On February 8, the city of Tangier experienced an unprecedented tragedy. Torrential rains had flooded the basement of the villa where this clandestine workshop was located. The workers who were there, mostly women, were trapped by the force of the torrents. Some managed to escape death while 28 drowned for lack of emergency exits.

A. B., the owner of the workshop who was among those saved at the last minute, was the subject of an investigation which showed many elements establishing his responsibility. But since his state of health has caused the trial to be postponed until the judge set the new date for May 20.
