Trial in Paris: Stripped of nationality, a Moroccan man tried for death threats against a famous lawyer
Prosecuted for threatening lawyer Thibault de Montbrial with death, Charaf-Din Aberouz is being tried in Paris. Stripped of his nationality, the defendant will be absent from the hearing, stuck in Morocco.
The case, examined on May 4, dates back to the trial of the Magnanville attack in autumn 2023. While his brother is sentenced to life imprisonment, Charaf-Din Aberouz allegedly turned toward the civil parties’ bench. Mimicking a throat-cutting gesture with his index finger, he allegedly said to his brother: "Don’t worry, he’s dead." The target is Master Thibault de Montbrial, a lawyer firmly committed against terrorism and under police protection for about ten years.

The suspect’s heavy past alarms the judiciary. This man born in the Yvelines notably served a sentence for terrorism in 2013, linked to an Afghan-Pakistani jihadist network. Analysis of his phones also demonstrated that he sent an interview of the threatened lawyer to various contacts.
According to details revealed by Le Figaro, this link ended up in the hands of the perpetrator of the Bir-Hakeim bridge attack, a few weeks before he carried out his act.
This high-tension trial opens nonetheless with an empty dock. Stripped of his French nationality in February 2025, this man of Moroccan origin is currently blocked on the other side of the Mediterranean. Although the judiciary authorized him to travel in October, it is now impossible for him to return to French soil.

His lawyer, Master Sami Khankan, asserts that his client contests the facts and wishes to appear, but emphasizes that "his return is prevented by Moroccan authorities." Facing this situation, the defense plans to demand a postponement of the case.
