Tragedy Exposes Healthcare Crisis in Moroccan Town of Taourirt

"Medical negligence." This is the term used by the municipality of Taourirt to describe the death of a young pregnant woman and her child, which occurred on February 24 at the provincial hospital. A tragic event that reveals the deep difficulties of a health facility that is clearly at the end of its rope.
Taourirt is outraged. And for good reason, this drama is only the tip of the iceberg. For years, the residents of Taourirt and the surrounding areas have been sounding the alarm, denouncing a glaring lack of resources, both material and human.
The municipality published a scathing statement, directly pointing to the responsibility of the services of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection. An accusation that comes even as the local authority had tried to improve the situation. A partnership with the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH) had made it possible to release funds for the acquisition of equipment, including a scanner. An effort that was clearly insufficient to fill the gaps.
The absence of the representative of the provincial delegation of the Ministry of Health at a crucial meeting in early February, devoted to "problems in the health sector", is seen as an additional provocation, explains the municipality.
"A minimum of medical equipment", "human resources", "doctors and specialists"... these are among the demands of the demonstrators, gathered in front of the hospital in support of the victim’s family. The visit of the regional health director, hastened by the mobilization, and his promises of "reforms" do not seem to be enough to calm the anger.
