Torrential Rains Flood Marrakech Airport, Disrupting Operations

The Marrakech-Menara international airport was temporarily paralyzed by the floods caused by the torrential rains that hit the ochre city.
In a matter of minutes, heavy flooding hit several alleys and streets on Sunday, turning them into rivers due to the intensity of the torrential rains of around 25 mm. These torrential rains, exceeding the maximum capacity of the stormwater drainage systems, caused damage to some pipes at the Marrakech-Menara airport, leading to more or less severe infiltrations in certain areas of the terminal, according to the National Airports Office (ONDA) in a press release, specifying that airport infrastructure and operations were affected without major impact on activity. However, some arriving flights had to be diverted due to the bad weather conditions.
Furthermore, ONDA states that it has set up a crisis unit that has mobilized teams and deployed the necessary measures immediately after the alerts were issued by the National Meteorology Directorate. The Office assures that the situation is now under control and that the Marrakech-Menara international airport is operating at full capacity.
