Thousands March in Morocco’s Capital, Urging Break with Israel over Gaza Conflict

Several thousand people demonstrated on Sunday in Rabat, waving Palestinian flags and calling on the government to break relations with Israel.
This demonstration follows the continuous Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in several thousand deaths, mainly children and women.
Sunday’s march, which saw the participation of around 3,000 people, marks a first: it was led by the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), the country’s main Islamist party, which led the government from 2011 to 2021. The protesters chanted "Palestine is not for sale", "The resistance continues towards victory and liberation" or "the people want an end to normalization".
On the diplomatic front, despite the normalization of relations with Israel initiated in 2020, Morocco continues to support the creation of a Palestinian state and calls for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
This position is increasingly contested in Morocco, particularly by Islamist and left-wing parties. On Sunday, the protesters also called for strengthening the boycott of brands accused of supporting Israel.
