Thousands Gain Moroccan Citizenship Through Parental Ties in 2023

The 2023 annual report of the public prosecutor’s office, recently published, reveals that a significant number of people born from mixed marriages have obtained Moroccan nationality by court decision.
12,967 people thus acquired Moroccan nationality in 2023 thanks to one of their parents, before the courts of first instance.
The report details the breakdown of these new acquisitions. 6,808 people became Moroccan through maternal filiation, and 6,159 through paternal filiation. 107 other people obtained Moroccan nationality by judicial decision, without further details on the reasons, reports Médias24.
The law 62-06 of 2007 allows Moroccan women to transmit their nationality to their children, born in Morocco or abroad. These children can apply for nationality after reaching the age of majority, if they have not benefited from it before.
The public prosecutor’s report also addresses the issue of mixed marriages. In 2023, 9,432 requests for authorization of mixed marriage were examined by the courts. 8,318 were approved.
Moroccan law provides for an investigation by the public prosecutor’s office on the foreign spouse as part of a request for a mixed marriage. Out of the 9,432 requests, 8,419 were the subject of an investigation by the competent public prosecutor’s offices.
