These Moroccan students who are making France

For a few years now, Moroccan students have been at the top of the ranking of foreign students in France. They contribute to the country’s economy, to the strengthening of the French workforce, but also to the strengthening of diplomatic ties between Rabat and Paris. An opportunity that the controversial immigration law almost made France lose.

There were around 47,000 Moroccan students enrolled in universities and higher education institutions for the 2019-2020 academic year. They spend an average of about 10,000 to 15,000 euros per year on housing, food, transportation and other current expenses, in addition to tuition fees. A significant financial contribution to the local economy, estimated at several hundred million euros each year. "Internationals studying in France bring in 5 billion euros a year for the country," the newspaper Le Monde pointed out in a recent article cited by Challenge.

In France, Moroccan and other foreign students quickly move from student status to worker status at the end of their training. While some choose to return to their home country, others prefer to stay in France. In 2020, nearly 25% of foreign graduates remained in the country to work. They constitute a valuable pool of skilled labor. With their skills, they stimulate innovation and productivity.

At the diplomatic level, Moroccan students work to strengthen the ties between Morocco and France by creating a bridge between the French and Moroccan peoples, by promoting bilateral cooperation in various fields such as education, research, culture and the economy. Each year, there are around 6,000 young French people pursuing higher education in Morocco.
