Tetouan Bank Director Suspended by Istiqlal Party Amid Embezzlement Allegations

Accused of embezzlement, Daniel Ziouzio, director of a bank agency in Tetouan and also vice-president of the municipality, has just been suspended by his party, Istiqlal.

After an "emergency meeting of the regional office of the party in Tetouan, chaired by the regional secretary, on Saturday, May 25, 2024, it was decided to freeze the membership of Daniel Ziouzio from all partisan and organizational functions until the justice renders its final verdict on the case, and consequently disciplinary measures will be taken against the person concerned," the party said in a statement.

This decision was made "by virtue of the provisions of the new statutes of the party, in particular those of Articles 16 and 19, which clearly show the commitment of the Istiqlal party to establish a code of conduct and ethics governing the work of all those who represent the party in the elected institutions, and obliging them to the principles of transparency and good governance," the note specifies.

Daniel Ziouzio, vice-president of the municipality of Tetouan, in charge of sports affairs, and member of the provisional committee of the Moghreb club of Tetouan, was arrested last Wednesday by the judicial police of Tetouan, following a complaint from Bank Al-Maghrib revealing suspicious withdrawal operations on the accounts of the clients of the bank agency of which the person concerned is the director.

The accused, with the complicity of another employee, is said to have diverted millions of dirhams from the accounts of the bank’s clients, including accounts belonging to large companies, real estate developers and business leaders.
