Tétouan Airport Struggles with Surge in Passengers, Causing Delays

Tétouan Saniat Rmel Airport is facing operational difficulties. The recent extension of the runway does not seem sufficient to manage the significant increase in passenger traffic, concentrated in a single cramped terminal.
The opening of new direct air links, to international and national destinations, has led to a sharp increase in activity. Flights to holy sites, particularly popular during Ramadan, illustrate this trend and show the limits of the current infrastructure.
Recently, a flight of a private Saudi company destined for the holy sites suffered a significant delay. Initially scheduled for 6 p.m., the departure was postponed to 4 a.m., more than ten hours later. This delay was attributed to the slowness of the procedures and the saturation of the airport.
As major international sporting events such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will host, approach, the issue of the capacity of Tétouan Airport is raised. Calls are multiplying to demand a rapid expansion of the terminal, in order to be able to accommodate the expected influx of travelers under optimal conditions.
