Teenager of North African Descent Assaulted in Suspected Racist Attack Near French School
Tuesday 2 July 2024, by
Anis, a 14-year-old student in the fourth grade at the Émile Zola college in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, was called a "welfare scrounger" and beaten up by three individuals as he was leaving school on Thursday, June 20. His mother denounces a racist attack.
As he was waiting for his mother around 7pm near his college after a sports class, Anis was attacked by three unknown young people. The 14-year-old boy, of Franco-Algerian origin, was insulted as a "welfare scrounger" and beaten up, reports France Bleu.
His mother is convinced that her son was attacked because of his Maghrebi origin. "My son has Algerian origins from his father, I myself am a bit ’typed’, a little brown, my son carries the origins of his parents. He was stigmatized solely on his appearance," she denounces.
The principal and the chief education advisor of the Émile Zola college in Sotteville-lès-Rouen have contacted Anis’ family to express their support. The teachers of the establishment have also sent a collective letter to the teenager, informs his mother.
For its part, the Normandy Academy Rectorate claims to have offered Anis and his mother "support in the process of filing a complaint" and put in place "educational continuity for the student pending his return to the establishment". Until last Wednesday, the teenager had not resumed classes at the college.
