Teenage Rape Victim Attempts Suicide After Lenient Sentence in Fez, Morocco

A 13-year-old teenager attempted to take her own life, to protest against the verdict handed down against her rapist by the Court of First Instance of Fez. Justice has not been served, she believes.
Abused a year ago, the young girl did not appreciate the one-year custodial sentence handed down against her rapist. Deeply affected by this sexual assault, she had to undergo a surgical procedure.
Dissatisfied with this verdict, she preferred to end her life by jumping from the three-story building where her parents live, reports Hespress. Seriously injured, she was evacuated to the hospital. Her lawyer, Jawad Gnaoui, denounces an unfair judgment towards his client. According to him, she was the victim of a "criminal act committed savagely". The girl’s counsel promises, however, to appeal this decision. According to him, the age of the accused does not guarantee him such a lenient verdict.
