Taxi Driver Acquitted in Fatal Accident of 3-Year-Old, Sparks Insurance Debate

On September 12, 2019, a 3-year-old child was run over by a taxi while playing near his home in Had Kourt. Taken to the health center of the commune, he died following an internal hemorrhage.
The driver, whose taxi did not have "civil liability" insurance, was held in custody for 48 hours before being brought before the Court of First Instance of Mechraa Belksiri.
Five days later, the judgment was pronounced before the defendant was referred to the investigating judge, acquitting him of any charge. He thus benefited from a dismissal, escaping criminal liability, and was sentenced to a suspended 2-month prison sentence, accompanied by a fine of 2,000 dirhams.
The victim’s father and his lawyer tried to appeal the judgment, but their request was rejected each time. With the statute of limitations having expired, the father has entrusted divine justice to assert his right and that of his 3-year-old son.
