Tax Officials in Marrakech Arrested for 400,000 Dirham Fraud Scheme

Elements of the regional brigade of the judicial police arrested two civil servants from the tax department in Marrakech accused of having defrauded two taxpayers to the tune of 400,000 DH.
In addition to the two civil servants, a motorcycle guard and his brother, working across the establishment, were also arrested. Their arrest follows a complaint for fraud filed by the two victims against the four accused. According to Mohamed Ghaloussi, president of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Property, the motorcycle guard, in coordination with one of the tax department officials in Marrakech, received an envelope containing 400,000 DH and in exchange handed over a receipt to the two victims, reports Al Akhbar. A receipt certifying that they had paid their taxes.
A few days later, the two taxpayers received several SMS from the administration inviting them to pay their taxes. This is how they discovered that they had in fact received a fake receipt and were victims of fraud. Following a complaint filed with the competent public prosecutor’s office, the elements of the regional judicial police brigade trapped and managed to arrest the people involved in this fraud. They would also be involved in several other cases that the justice system will take care of opening.
After being brought before the Attorney General of the Court of Appeal of Marrakech, one of the civil servants and the motorcycle guard are being prosecuted in custody, while the other two accused will appear on provisional release.
