Tangier Undergoes Major Transformation Ahead of 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

Tangier is transforming itself before hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) which will be held from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026 in Morocco. This is evidenced by the ongoing construction projects.
Road, sports and commercial infrastructures... In Tangier, preparations are well underway for hosting CAN 2025. Major construction sites are open on the Rabat Road, a major entry axis to Tangier, and on Boulevard Moulay Rachid, the second most frequented South-North route, reports Les Inspirations Éco. Several sections are thus being widened, particularly at the intersection with Boulevard Moulay Rachid, in the Boukhalef neighborhood, a very busy area. Its roundabout is being enlarged and equipped with new slip roads to better manage traffic flows and avoid congestion.
A widening project is also underway on Boulevard Moulay Rachid, which is heavily congested, and its improvement is essential to facilitate access to Tangier’s grand stadium, a central infrastructure for CAN 2025. This stadium, which will host the Group D teams during the competition, is undergoing full renovation: the installation of the roof and the laying of the turf are in progress.
In addition to these construction sites, several urban development projects, including the delimitation of public roads and the expropriation of land to allow for the extension and creation of new roads, intended to support the city’s development in view of international events, will also be implemented.
In the commercial domain, the municipal council of Tangier has proceeded with the demolition of the R’mel El Kbira market, which will make way for the construction of a new space comprising 198 shops, 48 points of sale dedicated to fruits, vegetables and fish, as well as sanitary facilities. It is also planned to build five service shops including a prayer room, restaurants and cafes. Another achievement: the construction of a multi-story parking lot of over 29,000 m² nearby, with a capacity of 441 spaces to meet the needs of merchants and visitors.
