Tangier's Transformation: Demolitions Pave Way for World Cup Glory

Major land works aimed at improving infrastructure, particularly in the vicinity of the Ibn Battouta stadium, have been undertaken as part of the preparations for Morocco’s hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) and the 2030 World Cup. Several demolitions have been carried out by the authorities.

On the ground, the local authorities are already proceeding with the demolition of residential houses located near the Ibrahim Al-Khalil complex, as part of the project to develop the main road leading to the Grand Stadium of Tangier. The demolition operation affects certain houses classified among the buildings that have exceeded the authorized area according to the alignment reports adopted. Financial compensation is planned for the owners of these houses. Apartments will also be allocated to them in the new Ibn Battouta city, in the Gzenaya area, according to the Rue20 website.

This operation is in line with the approach adopted by the authorities to deal with the buildings located on the new road routes planned as part of the development plan. "The ongoing works include the widening of Ibrahim Al-Khalil Avenue and several main roads that will connect the Ibn Battouta stadium to the vital axes of the city, in order to facilitate traffic and reduce the pressure on the old axes such as Moulay Rachid Avenue," it is specified.

These extensions are intended to facilitate access for supporters and means of transport to the stadium during the competition period, and to strengthen the link between the north and south of the city.
