Tangier to Restore Historic Spanish Bullring and Theater in $1.3 Million Project

A call for tenders will be launched in September for the rehabilitation and management of two emblematic cultural sites in Tangier. The Plaza de Toros and the Cervantes Theater, two places belonging to the Spanish heritage, will be the subject of a rehabilitation worth 13 million dirhams.
The Northern Region has allocated two budgets of 8 million and 5 million dirhams for the respective restoration of the Plaza de Toros and the Cervantes Theater.
Built in 1950 and having served as an arena dedicated to bullfighting until 1970, the Plaza de Toros has served as a cultural and artistic center before being finally abandoned. The renovation and design of the new design will be carried out by the city of Tangier and the Technical University of Valencia.
As for the Cervantes Theater, it was built in 1913 by a wealthy Spanish merchant, before being offered to Spain in 1928. Considered the most prestigious theater in North Africa, it has hosted the best artistic performances in the world. Due to management and financing problems, the Theater fell into ruins after serving as a photography museum for the last time in 1993.
