Tangier Officials Rule Out Water Cuts Despite Ongoing Drought Crisis

Despite the severe water deficit caused by six years of drought, the local authorities of Tangier do not currently envisage water cuts.
While some residents of Tangier fear water cuts, an anonymous source quoted by Tanja24 reassures that the local authorities do not plan to implement an exceptional water supply management program, in the context of the current water crisis. There will therefore be no restriction of drinking water supply services, adds the same source, specifying however that this measure remains conceivable depending on the circumstances. What makes the use of water cuts during certain periods of the day unlikely for the moment is that the recent rains have made it possible to supply the main dams on which the city and its surroundings depend. According to the latest data published by the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the filling rate of the main dams in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region is 42.50%, with a volume exceeding 731 million cubic meters.
Even if the situation seems satisfactory, the same source called on the inhabitants to be moderate due to the drop in the usual level of precipitation, by rationalizing the consumption of drinking water in various daily uses.
Faced with the serious water deficit facing Morocco, the regional project execution agencies (AREP) have been investing since 2022 in the construction of 120 small dams as part of this agreement. These achievements will continue in 2024. The kingdom also plans to supply coastal cities with drinking water, using seawater previously treated in desalination plants.
