Tangier’s Multimillion-Dollar Corniche Faces Deterioration After Heavy Rains

The new Gueznaia corniche, whose construction cost nearly 700 million dirhams, would be in a worrying state of deterioration. The heavy rains that recently hit the city of Tangier are said to have aggravated the cracking of its soil.
This phenomenon of cracking of the soil of the new Gzenaya corniche in Tangier has intensified due to the heavy rainfall that hit the region, reports the daily Al Akhbar, stressing that this situation risks jeopardizing this tourist site.
Elected officials from the Gzenaya municipal council have questioned the council president on this issue, calling for an investigation to determine the causes of this cracking of the corniche soil. In particular, the elected officials are trying to find out whether the companies that carried out the work took all the necessary measures to prevent landslides, the site hosting the corniche being located in a rocky area, not far from the beach.
The elected officials also ask the competent authorities to "review the management of this new corniche, which includes a football stadium, sports areas for young and old, green spaces, as well as areas dedicated to walking and pedestrians," indicating that "each time heavy rains hit the area, the shortcomings of the basic infrastructure are highlighted, as was the case on the evening of last Wednesday, when the Hassani complex was completely flooded".
They recall that a budget of 1.5 billion dirhams has recently been allocated to the municipality to strengthen and develop its basic infrastructure, including the development and management of waterways, liquid sanitation and other structuring projects.
