Tangier Mayor Faces Ouster Calls Amid Allegations of Mismanagement and Cronyism

Five opposition and majority parties within the Tangier Municipal Council are demanding the immediate departure of Mayor Mounir Laymouri (PAM). They have already referred the matter to the Wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.
These political parties accuse him of "leading the town hall towards a deadlock by getting involved in dubious affairs". The elected official is said to have placed some of his close associates at the head of certain commissions and frozen others. An attitude which, according to the contesting councilors, "hinders the smooth running of several vital sectors of the Tangier city council", reports the newspaper Al Akhbar.
According to the same source, since his election, Laymouri has distinguished himself by a cavalier management, leading to "conflicts between the presidents of the districts and the members of the municipal council". The protesters add to their request addressed to the Wali a list of alleged malfunctions in the management of the city, especially in the areas of hygiene, public lighting and public transport which, according to them, delay local development. They claim that keeping the mayor in his post also risks "aggravating the situation and fueling tensions within the municipal council".
