Tangier’s Legal Woes Skyrocket: City Seeks 80 Million Dirham Bailout

The official documents published by the finance commission of the Tangier municipality indicate that the expenses related to legal disputes have increased from 50 to 80 million dirhams in a single year. A unique case in the history of municipal management, notes the daily Al Akhbar, specifying that these are citizens and companies who have brought the disputes before the administrative court. They are related to expropriation operations carried out as part of road widening or administrative building construction projects.

The complaints of the applicants are summarized by the lack of payment of fair compensation and the non-compliance with the legal procedures in force by the municipality. Recently, the administrative court ordered the city to pay fines amounting to 50,000 dirhams in favor of several companies and owners. Some of these contentious cases were registered under the reign of the PJD. These judgments have been declared final and enforceable due to the absence of an appeal by the municipality - due to the lack of evidence of the legality of its actions.

The Tangier council should endorse this provision of 80 million dirhams during its budget session in October, next week.
