Tangier Launches Controversial Cleanup Campaign Ahead of Tourist Season

The authorities of the urban region of Tangier city launched on Saturday a vast operation to free the public domain in order to make the city cleaner and more attractive for the summer season.
The public domains at the level of the main streets and the adjacent alleys, including the promenade of the municipal beach, have been freed as part of this crackdown operation. Dozens of electric tricycles and scooters for rent were seized, as well as carts used for street food sales, reports the site Al3omk.
Similarly, illegal parking lots located in the city center have been cleared. The authorities have also cleared the city of hundreds of beggars, homeless people and sub-Saharan migrants. The latter were transferred to Ziaten for repatriation to their countries of origin. As for the beggars, they were taken into custody, pending their appearance before the competent prosecutor.
The municipal beach was not overlooked. With the help of the law enforcement and auxiliary forces, the authorities seized hundreds of chairs, parasols and tables, several large gas bottles, kitchen utensils, etc. At the same time, the local authorities of Charf-Mghogha carried out an operation to free the municipal beach of Malabata, just as those of the second and third administrative annexes managed to gather dozens of homeless people.
These actions follow the instructions of the wali of the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region, Younes Tazi, who insisted on the need to make the city clean and attractive for the upcoming summer season, as Tangier is a popular tourist destination for foreign and local tourists.
