Tangier Launches $12 Million Wastewater Recycling Project for Green Space Irrigation

The cities of Tangier and Gzenaya are implementing a project to treat and recycle wastewater for the irrigation of green spaces. It is the result of a new partnership between the delegated company Amendis and the relevant institutional departments and elected councils.
In a press release, Amendis officials inform that this project is more specifically aimed at "watering the main green spaces not served under the 2016 agreement from the treated wastewater from the Boukhalef WWTP", adding that it comes as a complement to the first phase carried out under the agreement signed on December 16, 2016.
With a total cost of 124 million dirhams, the project commits the North to the preservation of water resources and the recovery of treated wastewater for irrigation.
The note also recalls that the Boukhalef wastewater treatment plant, inaugurated six years ago, is based on activated sludge with tertiary treatment. Ultimately, "it will serve an additional area of 150 ha with a water need of 3 million m³/year and which includes in particular the green spaces located at the level of the RN1 complement, the RN2, the maritime ring road, the corniche, Al Qods boulevard, Moulay Rachid, Ziaten".
Building on its experience, the Veolia Maroc subsidiary is committed to the new project, in the management, operation and maintenance of the treated water supply and distribution facilities before the meter. The aim is to ensure the qualitative monitoring of the water intended for the watering of green spaces at the delivery points of the treated wastewater, in accordance with the applicable reuse standards.
