Tangier Cracks Down on Illegal Hookah Tobacco, Shisha Cafés Face Fines and Closures

Customs services are waging a relentless battle against shisha café owners. And for good reason, the use of contraband tobacco in the hookahs.
Customs officials have seized hundreds of kilograms of "Maâssel" (hookah tobacco) during several field operations, reports Al Akhbar. Similarly, some shisha café owners have been ordered to pay fines of up to one million dirhams.
Accused of smuggling and human trafficking, others have been taken into custody. They will have their operating permits revoked for non-compliance with applicable standards.
These decisions come in a context marked by multiple raids carried out by the police. The police had arrested several people wanted for their involvement in various criminal acts during these interventions. Pending their appearance in court, the suspects were taken into custody for further investigation.
