Tangier to Build Three Tramway Lines Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Sunday 6 April 2025, by Prince

Several tramway lines will be built in Tangier. The objective is to address the transportation difficulties in the northern city, in anticipation of the 2030 World Cup.

These three tramway lines will be built as part of a partnership between the Tangier City Council, the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council, the Agency for the Development of the Northern Regions, and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics. Feasibility studies have already been carried out to determine the distances of these lines, the cities they will cross, and the total cost of the project, reports L’Opinion.

According to these studies, this network of three tramway lines should extend over a distance of 25 to 30 km. With a total cost of 8.4 billion dirhams, the project aims to bring the city of Tangier’s transportation infrastructure up to the standards required by FIFA, in preparation for the 2030 World Cup that Morocco will jointly organize with Spain and Portugal.

The project, which has been under study since the end of 2014, aims to improve road traffic and reduce pollution. Alstom Transport Maroc will carry out these lines. In this context, Thi-Mai Tran, the manager of the French giant’s Moroccan subsidiary, recently met with the mayor of Tangier. The three tramway lines in Tangier will be financed by France and the EIB (65%) and Morocco (35%).
