Tangier Airport Sees 20% Passenger Surge in 2019, Boosting Morocco’s Air Travel

Air traffic in Tangier is on the rise, with a 20% increase in the number of passengers in 2019, i.e. 1,353,860 passengers. The Tangier Ibn Battouta International Airport has been able to take advantage of the summer holidays and the end-of-year festivities to establish itself as one of the most strategic destinations in Morocco.
With these figures achieved in 2019, Tangier maintains its reputation as the gateway to Africa, and continues to improve its air connectivity with the main destinations, both in Morocco and abroad. And by playing on the summer vacation and end-of-year holiday card, the Tangier Ibn Battouta International Airport has managed to carve out a place among the airports in the kingdom that have made impressive scores during 2019.
According to the National Airports Office (ONDA), in December 2019 alone, some 109,211 passengers transited through Tangier airport, an increase of more than 21.5%. The launch, on July 9, by Transavia, of a new low-cost link between the city of the Strait and Montpellier is planned.
The opening of this new line will allow Tangier to strengthen its air connections with a frequency of two flights per week. As for internal connectivity, the city of the Strait aims to improve its air links, particularly with Casablanca, reports aujourd’hui.ma.
Considered the best served in the region, it has always remained the most popular air border crossing point for travelers who choose the north as a transit point to other European countries.
By winning 1,353,860 travelers, out of a record total of 25,059,840 passengers recorded in 2019 by the airport infrastructures in Morocco, Tangier thus occupies the 5th rank nationally. It thus maintains its position, behind Mohammed V in Casablanca, Marrakech-Menara, Agadir Al Massira and Fès-Saïss.
