Swiss Chemical Giant Clariant Exits Morocco After Decades, Citing Heavy Losses

The Swiss company Clariant has ended decades of industrial presence in Morocco. The company is currently working to settle the accounts of its heavily loss-making Moroccan subsidiary.
In total, the chemical company based in Muttenz near Basel has injected no less than 60.4 million dirhams into Clariant Maroc, reports Challenge.ma. This measure aims to clean up its liabilities weighed down by the losses incurred in recent years, which exceed the 85 million dirham mark.
The shutdown in 2018 of the production line for polymers and chemical mixtures for the mining industry has accentuated a structural deficit due to lack of profitability in the Moroccan subsidiary. As a result, considerable losses from the liquidation of the activity were recorded.
However, this partial cessation of activity has not disrupted the course of the other operations carried out by Clariant Maroc, which has in fact been transformed into a purely commercial structure, according to the management of the group listed on the Zurich stock exchange. This structure also provides marketing support and customer service on behalf of other subsidiaries of the group.
