Swedish Woman and Moroccan Man Face Adultery Charges in Tangier

A Swedish national and her Moroccan lover face a two-year prison sentence for adultery and extramarital relations. They were brought before the Criminal Chamber near the Court of First Instance in Tangier, by the Attorney General, on Thursday, September 12.
The defendants were arrested in flagrante delicto of adultery, on Tuesday, September 3, following a complaint filed by the Moroccan’s wife. The latter, born in 1974 in Tangier, and working as a waiter in Stockholm, admitted to being married to a Moroccan with whom he has a child, reports the daily Assabah.
The man added that he had been separated from his wife since last April, and that divorce proceedings were underway before a Swedish court. As for his relationship with the Swedish woman, he claimed that they had been living together for a year and a half in Sweden, following an unofficial marriage celebrated in the presence of witnesses in a mosque in Stockholm.
For her part, the Swedish national declared that their love relationship had evolved into an extramarital relationship, and that apart from the act in Stockholm, she did not have any official document.
The Swedish woman claimed that she was aware of her companion’s divorce proceedings, but that she was unaware that their relationship was illegal, knowing that it was her first visit to Morocco and that no one had explained the laws in force to her.
In Morocco, Article 491 of the Penal Code provides for a prison sentence of one to two years for adultery. It stipulates that it can only be prosecuted if the spouse of one of the parties files a complaint.
