Suspected Arson Damages Future Asylum Center in Belgium, Protests Preceded Incident

The fire that broke out on Sunday evening in a building intended to become a temporary reception center for asylum seekers in Bilzen, near Hasselt, would be of criminal origin.
The firefighters, who arrived on the scene, according to the report drawn up, noticed traces of breaking and entering in the building.
Although no one was injured, the material damage is significant and the initial investigations reveal a criminally caused fire.
According to 7sur7.be, the fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. in the building located in Grote-Spouwen. It previously housed a retirement home. And, given the imminent opening of this center, two demonstrations had taken place to protest against this inauguration.
Residents had participated in these demonstrations, as well as Limbourgers from other regions of the province.
