Survey: 45% of Young Moroccans Distrust Political Parties Ahead of Elections

45% of young Moroccans do not trust political parties. This is what a survey has just confirmed, stating that they are very numerous not to belong to any of the 34 parties participating in the elections that will take place in the very near future.

Following a study carried out as part of the preparation of his doctoral thesis in public law, the researcher Mustapha Taj managed to demonstrate that out of a sample composed of 1189 young people in urban areas and 308 young people in rural areas, aged between 18 and 40 years old and of whom 76.5% have a university level, only a quarter of the respondents are politically active. Another quarter closely follow the political affairs of the kingdom. Thus, among the respondents, 54.7% are interested in or active in politics. But as the elections approach, only 30.7% of the young people surveyed intend to participate.

As for the remaining 70%, 44.7% of the 1516 respondents said they did not trust political parties, while 63.4% said they did not belong to any political party. A lack of confidence that explains the large number of abstentions of voters in the last elections. These young people, for the majority, demand from the State a performing education system, aid in entrepreneurship or in the creation of jobs in the civil service. The next elections do not bode well in the eyes of the young respondents. These, according to them, will not bring any change, but will once again demonstrate the gap between development promises and achievements.

However, 3% of young people preferred to work in civil society to participate in the political development of the country, while 12.5% believe that street protest can lead to change. For 44% of young people, political participation is essential for young people, while 44.7% say they are distrustful because they would not have found the right political party, although the kingdom has around 34 political parties.
