Survey: Two-Thirds of Moroccans Support Reopening Borders with Algeria

A majority of Moroccans say they are in favor of opening the land and air borders between Morocco and Algeria. This is the result of a survey conducted by the Arab Barometer.
Algeria had closed its land borders with Morocco on August 27, 1994, following a diplomatic rift between the two countries, sparked by the Marrakech attacks of August 24 of the same year. Decades later, 67% of Moroccans say they are in favor of opening these borders, according to a survey on the divergent opinions of Moroccans on current issues that have aroused keen interest in public opinion over the past two years, 2021 and 2022.
The survey also reveals that 68% of Moroccans say they are in favor of opening the air borders. Algeria had decided on September 22, 2021 to close its Algerian airspace to Moroccan civilian and military aircraft and those with a Moroccan registration number, after severing ties with its western neighbor on August 24 last.
The report also points out that citizens in the border region are much more in favor of reopening the land and air borders between Morocco and Algeria. 90% of citizens living in the Oriental region bordering Algeria are in favor of opening the land borders, while 94% of them wish to open the air borders between the two neighboring countries.
