Survey Reveals Gender Gap in Moroccan Household Financial Decisions

In Morocco, "men dominate financial decisions related to the management of the family institution," reveals among other things a survey conducted by the Afrobarometer network, which highlights the persistence of inequalities between men and women.
According to the results of this survey, which shows the persistence of gender gaps in Morocco, most men decide how household money is spent (46% vs. 15%), while women prefer to consult their spouses or other family members more often (38% vs. 14%). In terms of hiring, men should have more rights than women, according to 36% of respondents, who nevertheless believe that women and men should have the same rights in terms of inheritance (42%).
A minority of Moroccans believe that men and women should have the same rights in terms of land ownership, while many (62%) think of equal opportunities in appointments to public positions. A majority of those surveyed appreciate the government’s efforts to promote equal rights and opportunities for women. 63% of them say the government is doing a "fairly good" or "very good" job in this regard.
The survey was conducted between August 31 and September 19, 2022 among a sample of 1,200 Moroccan adults nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 3% and points at a 95% confidence level. Beyond the gender inequalities in Moroccan society that it highlights, it also aims to show the importance of financial education.
